Clay Basics: A 2-Part Handbuilding & Glazing Workshop
2-Part Class | Adults (18+) | All Materials Provided | No experience needed
Instructor: Jarmel Reitz
Join us for a hands-on, two-part clay intensive designed specifically for adult beginners, hobbyists, and anyone looking to try something new! In this workshop, you'll learn foundational techniques in hand-building with clay and finishing your pieces through glazing.
Part 1: Hand-Building (3 hours)
Location: Jarmel’s Studio, 440 E Girard Avenue
We’ll start with the basics of working with clay—pinching, coiling, slab building, and how to securely attach pieces. You’ll get to create three unique ceramic projects: a functional mug, a planter ready for your favorite plant, a fun scrap monster with the extras.
Part 2: Glazing & Finishing (2 hours)
Location: Freehand Art Supply, 308 E Girard Avenue
After your pieces are fired, we’ll reconvene at Freehand to learn about glazing techniques and how finishing choices affect the final look and feel of your ceramics. You’ll get to glaze your own creations and prep them for their final firing. All clay, tools, glazes, and firing are included.
Meet your Teacher:
Jarmel Reitz (they/them) of Jarmél by Jarmel is an artist, human, lover, activist and dreamer living and thriving in Philadelphia, PA. They began their creative pursuits through tactile pleasures like, camping, partying and intricate roll-playing games that involve amassing a two-dimetional avatar. Oh please, they still loves these things and plays D&D regularly, however their craft has landed on ceramics that they makes from vessel to glaze in their North Philly studio. Drawing creative influence from rosey cheeks, romance and queer vibes you get a full sense of their playfulness in every incense burner, dog bowl and planter they make.
